Filters are how shoppers find things. They are also one of the easiest ways to accidentally publish ten thousand near-identical pages.
Why facets create duplicates
Every combination of colour, size, brand and price can produce its own URL. Left unmanaged, search engines crawl them all, split ranking signals between near-identical pages and spend crawl budget on results nobody searches for.
Decide which combinations deserve a page
- Index the combinations people actually search for, such as a brand within a category.
- Keep every other combination usable for shoppers but out of the index.
- Give each indexed page a unique title, heading and description instead of one template repeated everywhere.
Keep the tools close to the people who use them
SEO work stalls when every change needs a developer. Site-wide fields for titles and descriptions, a redirects manager and reporting that shows what is being crawled let marketers act the same day. When you evaluate platforms, ask who can change these settings and how long it takes.
Design the two together
Good filtering and good SEO are not in conflict, but they do have to be planned together. Decide the rules first, then build the filters to follow them.
